Figurative work has the ability to speak to
time and place in a unique manner. With this
in mind I have begun to look at and develop
my work with some of the sensibilities of a
“Visual Anthropologist”.
My paintings
include present day artifacts, usually in
the form of earrings, trinkets or
decorations. They are painted in acrylic, in
large, loose, fast strokes to reflect the
materials, intensity and speed of present
day life.
As a visual
story teller I work towards telling the
stories of children, teens and young adults
in their “here and now” as they grow in the
21st Century societies. As a
“method painter” I spend weeks building my
character’s presence. When their voice is
strong, their emotions sharp and their
features clear, I can paint in an energetic,
gestural, fashion that has been described as
planned spontaneity.

I endeavour to create paintings that are
open enough, both thematically and
technically, to invite the viewer into the
process. To this end I work towards pieces
that are technically loose and “emotionally
three dimensional”, paintings that give the
viewer the opportunity to finish the parts
of the painting as well as build a unique
and personal third dimension to the work.
